How to Calculate Usable Truck Drawer Volume

Comparison Method

To calculate usable truck-drawer volume, multiply the usable interior length by the usable interior width and usable interior height, then divide cubic inches by 231 to convert the result to U.S. gallons. If a system has two or more drawers, calculate each usable interior separately and add the results.

The formula is simple. The important part is measuring every system on the same basis. Exterior enclosure dimensions, truck-bed volume, and an unexplained marketing capacity number are not substitutes for the clear interior space available to stored gear.

The basic formula

For a rectangular drawer measured in inches:

Usable gallons = interior length × interior width × interior height ÷ 231

For two identical drawers:

Total usable gallons = 2 × interior length × interior width × interior height ÷ 231

Gallons here express calculated geometric storage volume; they do not imply that the drawer is liquid-tight or waterproof.

Keep the unrounded result through the calculation. Round the displayed gallons only at the end so small rounding changes do not compound.

Use interior measurements, not the outer box

An exterior measurement includes walls, framing, seals, hardware, clearances, and other structure that cannot hold cargo. For a useful comparison, measure the clear interior space where gear can actually sit.

Record the dimensions in a consistent order:

  • Length: usable distance from the drawer front to the interior rear boundary
  • Width: usable clear space from one interior side to the other
  • Height: usable clear space from the drawer floor to the interior upper boundary

If an intrusion materially removes usable space, a single rectangular calculation may overstate practical capacity. Document the obstruction or divide the interior into smaller measurable shapes. The goal is a repeatable description of the storage space, not the largest possible number.

Count every drawer and preserve the shape

A two-drawer system should be calculated as two separate interiors. Do not call one drawer's width the combined width. For example, two 18-inch-wide drawers provide 36 inches of combined interior width, but they do not create one uninterrupted 36-inch opening. The center split still determines what can pass through each opening.

Total gallons and usable shape answer different questions:

  • Total volume estimates how much rectangular interior space exists.
  • Interior length determines whether long equipment fits.
  • Interior height limits taller gear.
  • Individual drawer width and center divisions determine the largest object that can pass through the opening.

A fair comparison should show both the calculated total and the dimensions that produced it.

The calculated difference is 97.0 gallons. Relative to 89.8 gallons, the Silver Bullet result is 108% more, or 2.08 times the calculated usable in-drawer volume.

Qualification: Calculated with the same interior-dimension method for both systems; results vary by truck and bed length.

How the percentage and multiple are calculated

Use the unrounded source calculations, then round the final public result:

Additional volume = Silver Bullet volume − comparison volume

Percent increase = additional volume ÷ comparison volume × 100

Volume multiple = Silver Bullet volume ÷ comparison volume

A percent increase and a multiple describe the same relationship from different angles. “108% more” means the result is 2.08 times the comparison value, not 1.08 times the value.

Common calculation errors

  • Using exterior dimensions: This counts structure as storage.
  • Forgetting the drawer count: One drawer's volume is not the total for a two-drawer system.
  • Mixing bed classes: Compare equivalent truck and bed-length configurations.
  • Changing the method between products: Use usable interior dimensions for both sides.
  • Rounding too early: Preserve source precision until the final result.
  • Hiding the shape: Gallons do not show whether wide or long gear fits through a divided opening.
  • Presenting one result as universal: Vehicle-specific dimensions change by truck and bed length.

What volume does not tell you

Volume does not replace vehicle configuration, access, extension, load capacity, sealing, cargo restraint, or installation review. A large interior still needs to open far enough for the loadout, carry the intended distributed load, and work with the exact truck, liner, and accessories.
