A practical framework for comparing truck-bed drawers by usable space, extension, load ratings, mounting, protection, vehicle details, and installation.
Choose a truck-bed drawer system by starting with your exact truck and the interior space you can actually use, not a generic exterior footprint. Then compare access, extension, distributed-load ratings, mounting flexibility, protection, construction, installation, and long-term serviceability. A strong system has to work with the vehicle, the gear, and the way the truck is used.
A single headline number rarely tells the whole story. A wide drawer may be shallow. A long enclosure may leave stored gear under the platform when open. A high load rating may apply only under distributed loading. Use the same questions for every system so the comparison stays useful.
1. Confirm the exact truck configuration
Record the truck's exact model year, make, model, and factory-stated bed length. Labels such as “short” and “standard” are not interchangeable across manufacturers, so select the actual configuration rather than assuming a familiar label means the same thing on every truck.
Also document anything that changes the installation interface or available bed space:
- Bed-liner type and thickness
- Tonneau cover, topper, cap, or bed rack
- Factory or aftermarket cargo rails
- Toolboxes, tanks, compressors, electrical equipment, or other installed hardware
- Prior repairs, modifications, corrosion, or visible bed damage

2. Compare usable interior dimensions
Exterior enclosure size does not show how much gear fits inside. Compare the usable interior length, width, and height. If a system uses two drawers, calculate each usable interior and add the results. A center divider, wheel-well intrusion, latch pocket, or other obstruction can change what fits even when the total calculated volume looks similar.
Think about the shape of the real loadout. Long recovery tools need uninterrupted length. Wide cases and bins may not pass through a split-drawer opening. Tall equipment may be limited by interior height. One ultra-wide drawer removes the center split, but the correct choice still depends on what the owner carries.

3. Check extension and reach
A long drawer is useful only when stored gear is reachable. Compare usable interior length with drawer travel and ask how much remains under the platform when the drawer is open. Consider the tailgate, bumper, trailer hitch, normal loading position, and the height from which the drawer will be accessed.

4. Read load ratings with their conditions
Drawer and platform ratings describe different structures. Ask for both and confirm the load basis. Silver Bullet rates its drawer to 400 lb and its platform to 2,000 lb, both under distributed loading. Vehicle payload, axle, tire, securement, and other applicable limits still control the complete truck.
A platform rating is not automatically an accessory-mount rating. Brackets, fasteners, mounting locations, dynamic vehicle loads, and the equipment manufacturer's requirements still matter. Heavy or safety-critical installations should be designed for the actual use case.
5. Plan how the loadout will change
Fixed compartments can be simple, but they can also lock a truck into one arrangement. A modular mounting surface can support changes between work, travel, recovery, and recreation without drilling a new pattern for every loadout.
Silver Bullet integrates HD T-slot mounting across the platform deck, drawer floor, and drawer sides. Common applications include movable tie-down points, dividers, tool holders, cargo stops, wheel chocks, recovery-board mounts, equipment cradles, and properly designed accessory brackets. 6. Understand protection language
Silver Bullet is gasket-sealed, weather-resistant, dust-resistant, and lockable. Its locking compression latch helps compress the drawer-face gasket and adds theft resistance by helping deter opportunistic access. No vehicle enclosure is invulnerable, and Silver Bullet does not publish a waterproof, submersion, pressure-washer, or IP-rating claim.
Ask what each manufacturer's protection wording means, how the closure works, and what maintenance the sealing surfaces require. Defined capabilities and limits are more useful than an undefined “all-weather” label.
7. Compare construction and serviceability
Material names alone do not describe the entire structure, but they are a useful starting point. Silver Bullet uses 6063-T6 aluminum with a black Type II, Class 1 architectural-grade anodized finish. The system is designed so seals, mounting points, rollers, and moving hardware can be inspected and serviced.
Ask how the drawer, platform, latch, seals, rollers, stops, and mounting components can be inspected and serviced. A truck-storage system should be evaluated for years of vibration, contamination, load cycles, and changing use, not just how it looks when new.
8. Understand installation before ordering
Determine whether drilling is required, whether existing accessories must be removed, who confirms the final vehicle configuration, and who supports the system after installation. Most supported Silver Bullet trucks use a no-drill process. The known drilling exception is the supported Toyota Tacoma 5-foot configuration; the supported Tacoma 6-foot configuration uses the standard no-drill process.
Silver Bullet drawer systems are built to order and currently require factory installation in Palmer Lake, Colorado.
